Cold Turkey - Is the best way to break a chemically dependant lawn. The sooner you stop using chemicals, the faster your soil will recover. Like a garden, the key to a trouble free, sustainable lawn, starts from the soil. Chemicals kill of beneficial organisms in the soil that would normally keep disease organisms in check as well as kill beneficial insects that normally control harmful insects and weaken lawns by causing them to grow too rapidly. When your lawn grows too rapidly, the roots themselves are exhausted and shallow creating thatch which is a breeding ground for insects and disease.
In addition, the chemicals that are used do absolutely nothing to solve the cause of the weed problems. In short, years of these practices take it's toll on our lawns. The organisms that chemicals kill are what act as a defense system to your lawn much like our immune system. You may notice signs of withdrawals at first, but the outcome will be a healthy natural lawn.
